A young Shrewsbury couple are delighted to have swapped life in a rented flat for a brand-new three- bedroom home at Lovell Homes’ Abbey Walk development.
For first-time buyers Dan Twigg, 29, and Sarah Edwards, 27, making the move to the development, which is just a little way to the north-west of the town centre, has definitely brought them the extra space and independence they were seeking.
“We wanted to have a garden and our own space without anyone living upstairs or below us,” explains Dan, a digital designer. “We had been looking for about six months and had been to the Lovell development a few times, initially looking at two-bedroom homes.
“We hadn’t really considered a three-bed house but over time, we realised it probably made sense as it would mean we had a bigger home and wouldn’t outgrow it so quickly.
“We chose the semi-detached Westwood house style because both the house and the garden are a good size and we liked the fact that the garden is south-facing and the property also has a garage.”
Another major benefit is that the mortgage on their new home actually works out cheaper than the amount they were paying to rent the two-bedroom apartment where they previously lived.
Using the Help to Buy: Equity Loan* scheme, Dan and Sarah were able to benefit from a 20 per cent Government loan which is interest-free for the first five years. As well as extending the range of homes the couple could afford, using Help to Buy has also freed up some of their budget, giving them more money to spend on furnishing and decorating their new living space - an important consideration when you move to a larger property.
When it came to choosing Abbey Walk, the development’s location only a little over a mile from the town centre was an important factor. Their new home saves Sarah around 20 minutes from her drive to work as an NHS mental health nurse in Stafford because she can avoid the middle of town. At the same time, Abbey Walk is close enough to the centre for Dan to walk to his job at Shrewsbury web design and digital marketing agency Lighthouse.
Buying a new-build property means the couple are now enjoying gradually putting their own stamp on their new home and don’t face the demands on their time and pocket often involved in taking on an older home.
Lovell currently has a limited number of semi-detached Westwood house types – the same property style bought by Dan and Sarah - available at Abbey Walk, starting (with garage) from £215,000 (£172,000 after a Help to Buy: Equity Loan). Also available is the two-bedroom Garston house style, from £165,000 (£132,000 after a Help to Buy: Equity Loan).
High-specification fixtures and fittings – including a brushed steel cooker hood, stainless steel hob splashback and Bosch oven and hob – come as standard with all homes at the development while buyers also have the security of knowing that properties are covered by the ten-year NHBC Warranty.
